KEY PROJECT ELEMENTS
Chasetown Civil Engineering was awarded a prestigious contract by Miller Homes to deliver earthworks, sewers, highways, and associated infrastructure for a large-scale residential development of 513 plots. The project involved complex civil engineering works, including constructing two Section 278 junctions, extensive earthworks, main sewer installation, and phased groundworks for residential plots. Through innovative solutions and precise project management, Chasetown Civil Engineering delivered the project to the highest standards, earning recognition for safety, sustainability, and quality.
The initial 20 weeks focused on bulk earthworks, with 215,000m³ of material moved to shape the site’s new topography. Key infrastructure included the Castle Farm Way junction, upgraded to a four-way signalized junction, and a new bellmouth junction at the A5. These Section 278 works, valued at over £2.5 million, included road widening, utility diversions, traffic signal installations, and over 10,000m² of resurfacing. Within the site, 1.65km of highways and 9.17km of main sewer drainage were constructed, complemented by pumping station civils and attenuation basins.
Chasetown Civil Engineering faced challenges such as asbestos removal, unexpected rock pockets, and regulatory changes during the project. Strategic phasing and re-phasing enabled simultaneous delivery of works, including accelerating plot foundation construction to meet updated NHBC regulations. This approach avoided significant additional costs for the client, with up to 120m³ of concrete poured daily to achieve the accelerated timeline. Temporary traffic signal arrangements ensured minimal disruption during junction works, demonstrating a commitment to stakeholder management.
The project was completed with zero safety incidents, underscoring Chasetown Civil Engineering's dedication to health and safety excellence. Innovative measures, such as muck stoppers on gullies and the adoption of air hoods, enhanced site safety. Environmental initiatives included installing the largest attenuation pond early in the program to manage water outfall and utilizing Kelly tanks for concrete washout treatment. These efforts contributed to the site winning the Miller Homes National H&S Award. Through a combination of expertise and collaboration, Chasetown Civil Engineering successfully delivered a transformative residential development project, meeting client expectations and community needs.
